I worked at the Stockton Record back in 1995-96. Kind of in a different capacity than you. I drove a Record truck...LOL!!Used to take a load of papers every night to Maaaaaaaaaaanteca!!! I'll never forget working the dock on news years 1996!!! At 12 midnight we were ducking for cover on the Record dock from all the drunks in downtown StockTown firing their guns in the air. It was like a war zone. One of the bullets hit the top of one of the Record trucks and landed on the floor...it was scary. I assume it came from Charter Way...a place you don't really want to be after dark..LOL!! Ok, back to basketball. Sorry guys, just going down memory lane..HA! HA!  Oh, that's ok; go ahead!Actually, I have alot of "scary Stock-Town stories"LOL!!...& I'm still here! But now I live in a 'good neighborhood' about 6 blocks south of UOP. My dad used to work in distribution for the Record too- back in the late 60's. He was fired for (ahem!) "unionizing activity".This was right after he had bought the house he lives in now on the east part of town by Franklin High School. Franklin is definitely the poor step-child of the SUSD(Stockton Unified School District). We had (& still don't have!) no football stadium & had to play our home games at Edison High on...(you guessed it!!)Charter way. After dark...& you can bet your nachos that the Edison students never let us feel very comfie there...though former NFL player Webster Slaughter was a Franklin Grad, along with yours truly. What passed for an athletic filed had 6-inch gopher holes were we turned our ankles trying to train for track-&-field.Despite our award winning jazz band, the students at the more "4-0" schools allways let us know we were the poor relations. In my case litereally...my cousins were at the 'burbie rich school' at the time, Lincoln. My cousin was a cheerleader, my other cousin captain of the waterpolo team. When we  played Lincoln for a home game my cuz(ms. cheerleader, of course!) asked me why our football team only had "black & mexican kids on it...where are all the white dudes?" I told her..."there's no white guys on the team 'cuz all the okies are smoking pot in the parking lot!" &...Then there was the time; just like OSM related on the "gotta love" thread on the lakers smacktalk forum that I was playing with a latin band at the san joaquin County fair(yep, yep, right there on Charter Way about 10:00pm on a saturday night in 102 degree weather, 1996) & a knife fight broke out between Nortenos & the gang from the southland(yes, again, you bet your Corona's that they were lakerfans!)while we were playing a song by Santana & the boys in blue had us keep playing until the arrests were made.Could go on..save the rest of the novel for another time...There's more, actually...LOL!!

LOL!!Like to hear the rest of that novel Rhondda!...& if 'Zags has another chapter he can throw in too..Why do I get the impression that Stocktown is like Detroit or something?

Glad to see our resident knickster get to do something fun; you go Jose`!

Yes...& the area around UOP is one of the best in the city! Funny story about the County fair Rhondda; but if you tell anymore "scary stories' how 'bout at least one postive one?You play alot locally, I'm sure you must have a few!

Curious Go 'Zags if your experience with the Record influenced you decision to move north, and...

Maria, I'm not a mind reader, it was just a lucky guess. Now go & have a good time courtesy of ESPN. But I have to correct you, I did see an invite over at Kings Super Fan for this event.

There's all kinds of crappy places here in N.Y. too, but there's a lot of cool stuff; just like any other city.I'm sure Stock-Town 's the same, but Rhondda's story was funny.

Oh,..  & you guys know my girl doesn't know that much about b-ball other than scores happen when the ball goes thru the hoop. She knows how to swipe my throw-back Mike Bibby jersey & cut it up while I'm at work though!LOL!We got our tix, I'll post about behind the scenes stuff if I get any extra info that doesn't go down on camera.

Well, Here's a positive thought; I'm playing with a coverband tonight & tommorrow night in downtown, which is really enjoying a rebirth with the new arena, & the new ball field. My gig is at a restaurant 'la sparza' ( an upscale, San-Fran style place you wouldn't have seen in downtown before the arena)right across the water from the new arena; which glows with purple lights on the channel at night.Cool stuff.

You mentioned in your column this morning putting in a "d" league (NBDL) B-Ball farm club in the arena, You suggested the farm club for the Goldenstate Warriors:

I have to respectfully disagree, Why not the farm club for the Kings with an Arena with purple lights? Why should the farm club for the Kings be in Texas? There are so many fans that can't get tickets for King's games that would love to attend; look at the attendance the Stockton Thunder hockey team gets with all the fans that come from San Jose` since they can't get Shark's tickets. Just a thought.
